Home

It's been a while since I've checked in! But, with good reason. I recently bought a house and am now all moved in. I also have a new dog. I'll be sharing much about those two things soon, but in the meantime I thought I'd share a little bit about another house I recently visited, Jack London's house.

Jack London wrote one of my favorite books, The Valley of the Moon. It chronicles a woman and her husband on their quest to find the perfect location to settle down and fulfill their simple dreams. The story somewhat parallels Jack London and his wife's search for their ranch in Glen Ellen, California. They dreamed of a valley where they could farm sustainably and raise livestock. They built a few structures on the ranch, but the Wolf House was to be their ultimate dream home. The four story, 26 room building had 9 fireplaces, a reflection pool in the courtyard and a manuscript vault for all of his works. Unfortunately, the house burned down a mere month before they were to move in, crushing his dreams. Jack London died three years later, never having rebuilt the house.

The lower two stories of Wolf House still remain as they were constructed of stone, but the top portions and some interior walls were built of wood. The tall columns that supported multiple fireplaces stand tall and undisturbed, giving an indication of the original height of the structure.

I'll be back soon with some pictures of my new home!
